Living Well, Sip by Sip
This work started out as a home for a wooden lion, and then was briefly destined to be a home for a wooden kangaroo. Neither seemed quite right so I brought out the stack of teacups to play with. These little teacups have been waiting in the wings for awhile to make their way into a book. I wanted them to be stacked irregularly, and with this book I managed to pull it off. Only the cups at the top and the bottom of the stack are attached to the book, the rest float freely and can twirl and twist in place.
I was thinking about the idea of “tea time” as I worked on this, so I chose a few small gears from my collection of watch parts to decorate the end pages along the side. There are also two small spoons to tie into the tea theme.
Materials used: book, card stock, watch gears, metal spoon, ceramic teacups, rubber stamp & ink, metallic paper decorations, and gel medium.

In the shade of the cherry blossoms
The little men are slightly set into the book, which is the least noticeable part, but took me a few hours to cut the four niches into the pages. The blossom flowers were made by using a paper punch and then stringing them together with a needle and thread. I used origami paper for both the flowers and the lovely blue background. The tree trunk is a rolled up page within the book with ink rubber stamped to create bark texture.

So many beautiful and inspiring works can be found on this woman’s Flickr set. Do check her out.. I had a hard time picking just one book to feature…

What I Didn’t Learn in Hebrew SchoolMixed media book collage, 11-3/4 x 9-1/2 x 1/4, 2005
I am particularly attracted to the lowest of literary life forms, the Discarded Library Book. My favorites have “DISCARD” stamped on the inside front covers, and as if this isn’t insult enough, “DISCARD” stamped here and there on the inside as well. The largest number of book collages come from a series of citizenship workbooks tossed away by my local public library and rescued from extinction by an acquaintance who works there. These little volumes make all sorts of statements and promises about our country which are belied by history and current events. “Why do we elect honest men to office?” A statement like this is all I need to get my itchy fingers cutting, pasting, altering and subverting.

The first thing I had to do was find a book that was 5” x 5” or smaller, so I went to my favorite used book store. I walked around the store twice, scanning the shelves for a little book. I couldn’t even find a board book, at first. I was almost ready to give up (after having nabbed a few other gems) but decided to go back to the kids’ section one more time. There, on the bottom shelf, buried underneath some other books was a miniature copy of Time for Bed. Perfect! Children’s board books are great for making altered books, especially for those just starting out with the art form, because they are small, sturdy, and have only a few pages to design on.
